Pellet-related Questions and Answers

Is the popular belief that the lighter the pellet, the higher the calorific value true?

It may be the case, but not necessarily. The dark colour of the pellet can arise in several ways. The dark colour is a disadvantage when the pellet production includes the use of, among other things, bark, which increases the ash content of the pellet (more than 0.5%). The dark colour is not a disadvantage if the raw material for the pellet has been dried at a higher temperature, which makes the pellet darker.

Mostly spruce and pine are used for pellet production, pellets made from spruce are lighter, using pine makes the pellet darker, but the calorific value of pine is higher than that of spruce.

How to determine which raw material pellet is best for my boiler or fireplace?

The easiest and most reliable way is through experimentation. Try different pellets and you will understand which one suits you best, in terms of both ash content and calorific value.

How important is the correct adjustment of the pellet boiler?

Very important. The adjustment of the pellet boiler depends primarily on the pellet you use, its specific gravity, and density. For example, a pellet with a lower calorific value burns with a smaller air volume, while a pellet with a higher calorific value uses more oxygen during combustion.

Is ash not just ash?

It is quite possible that not. For example, if you use pellets with a high calorific value, but the air flow is set too low, unburned carbon residues may form, which look like ash but are actually combustible material from the pellet that has not burned completely. This lowers the calorific value and increases the ash content.

Can pellets be stored outdoors?

No. Pellets are like a sponge in damp conditions, absorbing moisture. Store pellets indoors (garages, cellars) or outdoors, for example, under a shed. It is important to protect them from direct exposure to water.
